Make-A-Wish® Malaysia

Bahasa Malaysia version may be found here.

Inspired by her time spent volunteering with the foundation in the United States, Sandra Kirwan decided to bring the world’s largest wish-granting organisation, Make-A-Wish®, to Malaysian shores.

Following this, a team of dedicated volunteers quickly banded together, united by their belief in the Power of Wishes. After months of hard work, in late 2010, the first wish in Malaysia was granted (read Aqilah’s story below).

At any given time in Malaysia, there are over 20,000 children seeking treatment for critical illnesses. Needless to say, these children’s wishes, hopes and dreams take a back seat, as all their focus and energy, as well as their families’, are channelled into battling the illness.

Make-A-Wish® Malaysia allows the child and their family to put aside their challenges for a day by immersing themselves in the activities organised on Wish Day. Each wish sees families filled with hope, strength and joy, and empowered to once again take up the fight against the medical challenges they face.

It is these magical experiences that Make-A-Wish® Malaysia, and all the other Make-A-Wish® foundations around the world, seek to fulfil and will continue to do so with the support of dedicated volunteers and supporters.

The First Malaysian Wish: Aqilah Flies High

Nine-year-old Aqilah, who was diagnosed with rhabdomyosarcoma (cancer of the soft tissue sarcoma), had always dreamt about being an air stewardess. Partnering with Malaysia Airlines Service (MAS) and the Pelangi Beach Resort Langkawi, Make-A-Wish® Malaysia was determined to see the wish of this young girl come true, the very first Make-A-Wish® Malaysia wish.

Aqilah and her family started the day at the Malaysia Airlines Academy, where Aqilah tested out the MH Mock Flight Simulator and received a tour of the academy. Then, decked out in her custom-made MAS air stewardess uniform, Aqilah and family boarded the MAS plane bound for Langkawi. There, they checked into the beautiful Meritus Pelangi Beach Resort & Spa for a warm and relaxing stay, and Aqilah’s joy was evident for all to see.

“For our family, the wish gave us much needed time to be together as a family, away from all the stress… Aqilah will surely cherish these memories for the rest of her life. We could never do enough to express our gratitude for all you have done.” – Aqilah’s family.

Special thanks to Malaysia Airlines Service (MAS) and the Pelangi Beach Resort Langkawi for being our partners in making Aqilah’s wish come true.
