Welcome Aboard, Assistant Captain Tharunesh!

Instead of just being another one of a few thousand passengers on a normal cruise ship, Tharunesh was able be assistant boat captain for a day!

Age: 7 (2020)

Illness: B-cell acute lymphoblastic leukaemia

Wish: To go on a boat cruise

Wish Day: 5th July 2020

Seven-year-old Tharunesh was diagnosed with leukaemia in early 2019 and referred to Make-A-Wish Malaysia by his attending physician in October that year. As luck would have it, the initial plan to bring Tharunesh on a cruise trip was disrupted several times due to clashes with his treatments, overwhelming crowds during the school holidays, and the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic. However, every cloud has a silver lining.

With the generous support of Simpson Marine, Tharunesh was given the chance to board a private “big boat” - therefore, instead of just being another one of a few thousand passengers on a normal cruise ship, Tharunesh was able to have a much more personalised and meaningful experience!

Upon boarding the deck, the shy boy opened up when he was greeted by a Dinosaur mascot, even suggesting to do the “chicken dance” with the Dinosaur, bringing laughter to everyone and allowing him to to forget about his illness and the tough treatments that he endured. As his confidence grew, Tharunesh moved about the boat with ease, even posing and making funny faces for the drone camera. He was then “promoted” to the assistant captain of the boat, and got to hold the steering wheel alongside Captain Khairy!

The excitement of discovering various parts of the boat, the thrill of watching the waves passing beneath, and the special lunch served on-deck brought Tharunesh and his family much joy. To see Tharunesh transformed into a happy child again meant the world to his mother and grandmother especially.

Make-A-Wish Malaysia would like to thank NADICorp Holdings Sdn Bhd and Simpson Marine Sdn Bhd for helping to grant Tharunesh’s wish and creating unforgettable memories for him and his family.
