Zahrel’s wish

Name : Zahrel
Age : 13 years old (2023)
Illness : brain abscess
Wish : To have a reunion with my motivator therapist

For our 900th wish, we share with you Zahrel’s heartfelt story.

13 year old Zahrel from Kota Marudu, Sabah fell into a coma for 7 months and lost his vision due to an infection in his left frontal brain.

Spending most of his early years in Kota Kinabalu, Zahrel and his family had to quickly adapt to the quiet life in Kota Marudu.

“We moved to Kota Marudu so we could afford a house with flat lands, that way he can move around in his wheelchair… but moving here also meant that we wake up at 3:30am so he can get to his school in Tuaran on time” said Lidiah.

“The experience of him falling sick is still traumatising for me.. I went into the emergency room thinking my son just has a high fever, only to walk out seven months later with him waking up from a coma and blind..”

While adapting to drastic changes, Zahrel created a bond with his motivator therapist who helped him regain motivation through his lowest times.

On his wish day, Zahrel reunited with Dr Faizal Zainudin who is now based in Kuala Lumpur. They met at the Royal Selangor Visitor Centre in Setapak and enjoyed the experience of making a pewter dish for each other.

“I had a team of nurses and therapists who were part of Zahrel’s recovery process. He is a special boy. He is a very sweet person and obedient too. I have been in contact with his family over his progress. He has managed to complete his primary education and he is now learning Braille. I want him to master Braille as he can’t see and speak. It will be important for him to be ready for adulthood and with the right support system, he can progress well. I feel his mother is a great force behind his recovery. She gives 100% in ensuring he follows the recovery therapy process. We trained her and she does the therapy with him at home. During the Covid-19 pandemic, she would send us videos on the therapy sessions she conducted at home,” he said.

We thank the late Mr Tan Thiam Hock and his family, Malaysia Airlines, Pavilion Hotel Kuala Lumpur managed by Banyan Tree, Royal Selangor and National Association for the Blind Kuala Lumpur for helping us grant Zahrel’s very special wish.

Name : Ahmad
Age : 8 years old (2023)
Illness : leukaemia
Wish : To have a Thomas & Friends themed party

Ahmad has always found comfort when watching Thomas & friends during his three cycles of chemotherapy for leukaemia.

Ahmad’s wish was something new and something special indeed when we asked our friends over at Prasarana Malaysia Bhd to help grant Ahmad’s wish to have a Thomas & friends-themed birthday party… on one of their RapidKL trains!

A six coach RapidKL train decked out with balloons and cut out characters from the show arrived at the Ampang LRT station and you can hear the oohs and ahas coming from Ahmad as he stepped into the first coach.

The young boy then proved his quick wits in a game of charades and was gifted Thomas the train merchandise and toys.

“Today is such a memorable day for Ahmad and the family, thank you Make-A-Wish Malaysia and Prasarana for making Ahmad’s dream come true. It means so much to him and to us as parents, to know that the community is there for us” said Ahmad’s mum, Syafiqah.

May Chell’s wish to have a pair of rabbits

Name : May Chell
Age : 13 years old (2022)
Illness : bone cancer
Wish : To have a pair of rabbits

May Chell loves playing netball and was just weeks away from the state competition when her right leg started to swell.  She persisted with the training and concealed the swelling until a day before the competition when it became too obvious.

After a thorough checkup at the Sabah Women & Children Hospital located 3 hours away, doctors told May Chell and her family the devastating news – May Chell has bone cancer.

Bouts of intensive chemotherapy treatments were prescribed but the stubborn tumour remained.  The next solution was to amputate May Chell’s right leg; which brought despair and heartache to May Chell and her family.    Despite this devastating news, the family gathered around to lend their support and told May Chell she could perhaps join the Paralympic netball team in the future.  To May Chell, this seemed the end of her hopes and dreams.

May Chell’s wish for a pair of rabbits was planned and helped put together by a team of corporate staff who worked on it as part of a Wish Challenge.  Some of the ideas they came up with included a custom designed poster with May Chell’s favourite actors (Jackie Chan and P.Ramlee) holding a rabbit each, a colourful and complete book on rabbit care, a personal journal for May Chell to pen her thoughts and hopes during her medical battle, a Rabbit Mama t-shirt & bunny hat to wear when she welcomes her  bunnies home!

May Chell cherished these items and started to record her daily activities in the journal even before choosing the rabbits of her choice.  This was a much needed distraction to help her overcome the pain and tears during her treatment and long stays in the hospital.

When presented with her bunnies, May Chell named them Mimi and MeiMei and said,  “I can’t wait to take care of Mimi & Meimei, and give them so much love!”

According to May Chell’s sister Juraidah, who is also her primary caregiver, “She needed something like the bunnies to take care of and to take comfort in. Just looking at the bunnies eat makes her happy… that smile means so much to us.  We stay resilient for her, if we remain strong then May Chell will become stronger,”

May Chell’s wish marks the 700th wish for Make-A-Wish Malaysia.
